Remember the tornado?

One afternoon in 1957 the sky turned green.  At about 3:00pm, a twister set its sight on Oak Cliff. Residents could see it coming, and many jumped in their cars to outrun it. It skipped through North Oak Cliff and Wynnewood, ripping apart many homes. On some blocks one home would be completely lost while the house next door was barely touched. Here are some pictures of the Tornado:

I was on one of the city buses headed home.  The bus driver say the funnel and did what they tell you to do.  He turned 90o to the funnel.  The funnel turned with us.  He turned -- it turned.  All the while, I was watching a huge bird trying to fly out of the storm.  It was struggling to create some space between it and the storm.  It would move away twenty feet only to get drawn back by the suction of the storm.  It was still fighting when we finally lost sight of it.

We went down a Elm-lined street like Rosemont with the funnel on our tail.  It was like a giant yanking carrots out of a field.  Those trees that were touching above the street were yanked out and thrown over the houses lining the street.  You could see curbing and sidewalk buckle as the roots left the ground.

There was an apartment building near Davis and Madison where the funnel took off a corner of the building.  A woman was taking a bath and wound up with a unobstructed view of the neighborhood.  The funnel left most everything in place but emptied the water out of the tub.
