I had a crush on Mark Scherzer in 8th grade, but nothing ever came of it.  Until about 1967, when I ran into him one day at the Bronco Bowl.  He had just come back from Viet Nam, and he asked me out.  He took me to dinner at another Oak Cliff landmark, The Torch on Ft. Worth Avenue.  Although we only went out a couple of times, he was a great date and very nice.

Funny, both the Bronco Bowl and the Torch are gone now, and I don't have a clue whatever happened to Mark, but I remember all 3 fondly.

Kathleen,

I am awed and amazed how you keep coming up with pictures of long-bygone places which now  exist vividly only in our memories--most recently Wee St. Andrews, The Torch Restaurant, and Bronco Bowl. Here's a real challenge for you. Do you remember "Pappy's Showland" on Fort Worth Avenue? It was a huge entertainment venue for the time and has been gone considerably longer than Bronco Bowl.

Ft. Worth Avenue, Ft. Worth Highway, Ft. Worth Cutoff--then the opening of the Ft. Worth Turnpike--and, when it was paid for, it became a free highway. Seems the opposite of the way tollroads want to operate today, huh? Have any of you gotten any of the bogus bills containing huge fines from the tollroad authority?

I remember your birthday party in the eighth grade. People were supposed to dress as what they wanted to be when they grew up. I still don't know (but I never became the Dodger shortstop).

Jerry

My first boyfriend was Mark Sherzer.  We went "steady" in the sixth grade.  Our dates consisted of going to the skating rink on saturday mornings, where we would hold hands and skate the "couples" skate.
